Default Witten and Gates

Hey guys,
I thought you all would appreciate this. I'm interested to see your comments as well.

In a 12 team expert league that I'm drafting in right now, I just took Jason Witten and Antonio Gates back-to-back.

I had the first overall pick, and took AP - my guy.

In rounds two and three I took Marques Colston and Steve Smith back-to-back, then in rounds four and five, I snagged Witten AND Gates.

I can start two TEs. We're required to start one, and a RB/WR/TE flex.

Thoughts?

We're commenting on this more in-depth in the USP forums right now!

I really like bowe and one TE but by taking 2 TE's who are proven gives you a real opportunity in PPR leagues. I have a similar situation as I have the first pick as well. I want to know what RB2 were available when you took Steve Smith also. This plan could be something I look into if you think you ended up with a quality team. You can still snag a rookie RB, d. Williams, and Chris Johnson so not too worried about RB2 but wondering whom you passed on when you took Smitty.

Your thoughts?

Send the entire draft when you get a chance and explain your picks.

I love the idea I toyed with it myself earlier this year when I had three picks in round four for a dynasty league. Some unusual things happened and I didnt do it. I did however, end up with Witten, Holt and Marshall with those picks so I think I did alright.

I am a big believer in Winslow. Gates has been declining a bit. So I probably would have went Witten and Winslow

Default Winslow

I like witten winslow as well and I am surprised IG didn't do this considering he has drafted Winslow in other leagues around this same spot. Thoughts???

I love the move and wanted to use it in my keeper league last year. It has a WR/TE flex but scoring is weighted towards TE with TE getting 1 ppr and WR getting 1 pt for 2 receptions. I had kept Gates and was targeting Gonzalez with my 4th round pick but another owner who had kept Winslow selected Gonzalez with his 3rd round pick. I passed on Witten thinking I could get him later because he was coming off of a 1 TD season but he went 3 spots after my 4th round pick.
The top tier TEs like Witten, Gates, Winslow and Gonzalez produce solid numbers most weeks and match up well with most RB3s that some teams could field. I think being able to limit other teams at TE by having 2 of the top tier is a great strategy. This is an example of knowing your league rules to be able to use them to your advantage.

I had Vernin Davis in my dynasty league. I traded an extra 1st round draft pick I had to aquire Winslow. I probably could have gotten more had I included Vernin Davis. (I will need to restock LBs next year and a little planning ahead does not hurt) but when I made the trade I had my minds eye on slapping Winslow in my Flex SPot if VD can put up average TE #s Hopefully by week three I will be playing a 2 TE set

Zedd's scoring system is the only scenario I can see doubling up on TEs like that being beneficial. If you want 2 strong TEs you can wait until there's another run on them, especially considering the disparity between the top 12 has decreased every year since Gonzalez & Gates brought the position back into vogue.

The worst thing is that you've probably lost out on any reliable RB2s. At this point you're forced to stock up on questionable RBs hoping you hit on at least one & hopefully two. Do you really feel confident going into AP's bye week with Felix Jones as your starter?

While you're loading up on reserve type RBs, you'll be missing out on the last tier of WRs that could actually develop into servicable starters: J. Walker, B. Johnson, A. Gonzalez.

By waiting this long to draft a QB, I'm assuming you'll be waiting until round 7. Since you still have 2 RBs & at least 1 WR left to draft you're in a position where you don't really have the luxury of drafting 2 QBs back to back.

It seems to me that every time one of your starters has a bye week you'll end up being severely handicapped.

While I applaud your ingenuity, and willingness to go against conventional wisdom, I think you would have been much better served to wait to draft your second TE until round 10.

*For the record: I've won exactly -0- Fantasy Titles (none). So what do I know?*

Interesting strategy, for sure. But I am big on getting solid RBs early (i like to have 4 RBs by the end of round 5), so i could never wait till round 6 to grab my #2.
I like taking two TEs back to back, but later in the draft (Heap and V.Davis).
But you were drafting for PPR, so perhaps this makes more sense.

Default Felix Jones

I am in 2 PPRs and I am indeed counting on Felix Jones as my bye week replacement in those weeks. I will take two subpar bye weeks for a chance to place the best team on the field for the other 14 weeks.

edot: think you will be suprised how much he scores in a PPR. I think he will be a solid bye week replacement.
